Duterte to attend 4th Marawi liberation observance

President Duterte said he will visit Marawi City to mark the fourth-year anniversary of the war-torn city's liberation from terrorists.

Duterte made the statement days ahead of the anniversary of Marawi's liberation from pro-Islamic State (ISIS) elements on October 17.

In the second part of his pre-recorded address aired Friday morning, October 1, the President told Housing Secretary Eduardo del Rosario that he will attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the city's rehabilitated Grand Mosque.

"Yes, yes. Pumunta pa nga ako doon during wartime, lalo na peace time na (I even went there during wartime, what more now during peace time)," he said.

"It's something that we can be proud of," he added.

Marawi City was the battleground of the five-month war between pro-ISIS terrorists and the government. The country will commemorate the fourth year of its liberation from the terrorists on October 17.

In his sixth and final State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 26, the President ordered Task Force Bangon Marawi to hurry up completing the rehabilitation of the war-torn city so families affected by the war four years ago can finally return home.

"Rebuilding a better Marawi remains today, still, not completed," he said.

"To Task Force Bangon Marawi, we need to race against time, and you have to finish the necessary work to rehabilitate the war-torn city and bring its families back home," he added.

In May this year, Malacañang expressed confidence that the rehabilitation of the war-torn city of Marawi can be completed by the end of President Duterte's term.
