14 senatoriables, 18 partylists seek national posts for May 2022 polls so far

Fourteen individuals vying for seats in the Senate have filed their certificate of candidacy (COC) for senator at the Harbor Garden Tent in Sofitel Manila, Pasay City on Friday, Oct. 1.

Among the early birds during the first day of the filing were House Deputy Speaker and Antique Representative Loren Legarda and former Senate secretary Lutgardo Barbo who was the first to arrive at the venue.

Senate race

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said Legarda, who is seeking a comeback in the Senate, was the first to file her COC among the senatorial hopefuls.

Aside from Legarda, Sorsogon Governor Francis “Chiz” Escudero is aiming to return to the Senate after filing his COC for the May 2022 polls. Lawyer George Garcia filed the COC on behalf of Escudero.

Likewise, Senator Risa Hontiveros has filed her COC at around noon to formalize her bid for another term in the Senate.

Those who also filed their candidacy for the next year’s elections are former Pagsanjan, Laguna mayor Abner Afuang, animal welfare advocate Norman Marquez, Bay Maylanie Esmael, and Bertito Del Mundo.

More senatorial candidates have filed their COC past noon. They are Romeo Plasquita, Samuel Sanchez, Baldomero Falcone, and Phil Delos Reyes, and Ziegfried “Tapzlord” Giron, and Agnes Afable.

Partylists

Comelec Director James Jimenez said 18 partylists that have officially fielded their candidates and filed their certificates of nominations and acceptance (CONA) so far.

These are partylists Agap, Kabayan, An-Waray, DIWA, Pilipinas para sa Pinoy, Alona, TODA, CANCER, People’s Volunteer Against Illegal Drugs (PVAID), and Patriotic Coalition of Marginalized Nationals, INC (1-PACMAN).

Moreover, partylists ACT-CIS, MARINO, Ako Tanod, Ang Probinsyano, PBA, Turismo Isulong Mo, COOP-NATCCO, and WACCAA (Women and Child Crime Abuse Assistance) also formalized their bid on Friday.

The Comelec said the filing of COCs for the May 2022 elections will run from Oct. 1 to 8.
