Senior Citizen party-list files CONA, vows more laws for elderly, retirees

A partylist group representing senior citizens in the country has filed Certificate of Nomination and Certificate of Acceptance of Nomination before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for the May 2022 polls on Tuesday, Oct. 5.

Partylist group Senior Citizen Rep. Rodolfo Ordanes said one of their priority agenda is the vaccination of more or less 10 million seniors nationwide, and more accessible treatment for those who contracted the virus.

Among the group’s related constituencies are the war veterans, armed services retirees, and pensioners.

The Senior Citizen Party-list’s Certificate of Nomination and Certificate of Acceptance of Nomination were filed by Ordanes' Chief of Staff Michell Sastado and legal counsel Atty. Atty Maria Rhona S. Vergara.

It was theSenior Citizen Party-list which pushed for the proposal to raise to at least P1,000 from P500.00 the monthly social pension of indigent senior citizens through House Bill 9459.

The House of Representatives approved on third and final reading HB 9459 in July 2021 and is now in the Senate.

In Ordanes’ social pension bill, he made it easier for seniors to avail of the social pension. He, together with his colleagues amended the qualifications for social pensioner by eliminating the need for them to also be “frail, sickly and disabled.”

“Now, our senior citizens just have to prove that they do not have a permanent source of income. This will make it easier for senior citizens to avail of the social pension and eliminate one of the causes of corruption on the ground in its disbursement said Ordanes, who chairs the House special committee on senior citizens affairs.

Ordanes also shepherded another bill to approval on 3rd and final reading in the House – the bill for early voting for seniors and PWDs in national and local elections (HB 9562).

Once HB 9562 becomes a law, there shall be early voting where seniors and PWDs may choose to cast their ballots at accessible establishment designated by the COMELEC within seven working days before the set date of the elections.

“We have a very well-defined legislative agenda and matching constituencies. Our legislative accomplishments reflect this in new laws, pending bills, and nationally-budgeted programs and public services,” he said.

Ordanes also said their party-list will work on the many other items on their legislative agenda.

Among Senior Citizen Party-list’s pieces of legislation are Centenarian Bill (HB 8003), Seniors Social Pension Bill (HB 9459), Philhealth Premium Rate Hike Suspension (HB 8461), Bayanihan To Arise As One Act (HB 9411) and the Permanent Validity of Certificates of Live Birth, Death, and Marriage Act (9175).
