Facebook is down for hours

Facebook and its apps are down since around 11:40 pm last night. This includes Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp, affecting billions of users â€” and advertisers â€” worldwide.

According to other media sites, this outage has also affected employees from communicating within Facebook's internal systems. Facebook, apparently, has employees to log in with their work accounts to use other tools like Zoom. (Talk about never putting all the eggs in one basket.) This has forced employees to use alternative ways to talk to each other like Discord. Those who were already logged in before the outage could still use their tools, but they cannot receive or send emails to anyone who hasn't logged in to Facebook's system.

Further, some employees are even locked out of their buildings as access requires scanning of their Facebook badges.

Facebook still hasn't talked about how the outage started. And all they could say, through a spokesperson, was that they were having "networking issues" and that they "are working as fast as possible to debug and restore" their systems.

Facebook engineers have already been sent to the company's data center in California to fix the issue.

According to Down Detector the problem has stemmed from DNS. Dane Knecht, Cloudflare senior vice president said that Facebook's border gateway protocol routes was "withdraw from the internet."
