PVL eyes April 10 opening of first pro season

Organizers of the Premier Volleyball League have tentatively set its first conference on April 10 at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna.

Pending approval from the Inter-Agency Task Force, the scheduled Open Conference will be the league’s first tournament since turning professional last November.

It will also be the first volleyball tournament since pandemic halted local sports events for most parts last year.

League commissioner Tony Liao said they have booked the venue for a month where the tournament will be under a bubble concept similar to the PBA held in Clark.

The conference will be limited to eight teams composed of Creamline, Petro Gazz, Motolite, BanKo Perlas, Choco Mucho, BaliPure-Chef’s Classics and two guest teams.

“Once we get the go signal from the IATF which the Games and Amusement Board is helping us, practices will resume right away,” Liao said.

Since turning pro last November, the league has been working on getting approval for team workouts from the IATF.

At the moment, only pro leagues in basketball, 3x3 basketball, football and boxing are allowed to hold tournaments and practices.

But with the IATF approval for training for Olympic hopefuls and qualifiers, the league is optimistic volleyball will return soon.
