2020.. WOW!! What a year. What. A. Year. I can’t even begin to describe how crazy the year 2020 was. It was when the lives of billions of people were turned upside down. 2020 seemed like every day was a new challenge for us all. But it was also a daily opportunity to do good and change things for the better.
Yes, despite the countless tragedies, there were several good things that happened. From the development of a vaccine in record time, to personal milestones by people who used the pandemic to achieve personal victories, achievements, and milestones. Let’s not lose sight of that. That despite all the tragedies, there were still some positive things that happened in 2020.
But now we’re in 2021. A new year. A new hope. For EVERYONE. A new year is like a reset button for us. It’s an opportunity that most of us desperately need. And we have to be grateful that we have that opportunity.
Let’s make the most of 2021. I know there’ll be a lot of challenges up ahead for all of us, both as a nation and for each of us, individually. But the fact that you’re reading this column is proof that you’ve survived 2020. You’re luckier than over 1,830,000 people who died around the globe because of the virus in 2020. If you entered 2021 without getting the virus that means you’re luckier than over 83 million people worldwide who got infected with the virus last year. If you were able to celebrate New Year’s Eve with your family in your house, that means you’re luckier than many Filipinos who lost everything during the storms that hit the Philippines in 2020 and to this day, do not know what will happen, or what to do.
We’ve all gone through a year that most of us thought would never end. 2020 seemed like 20 years rolled into one. But we’re here, still standing (some barely). So, let’s make the most of it. Seize the opportunity to change things for the better. Understand our ability to help those who are less fortunate or who’ve suffered a personal disaster. Make officials accountable for their actions, or inactions, and commend those who’ve been doing good. There is a saying: “One Life, Live It.” Let’s understand that we have one life, let’s make the most of it and make this a better world for ourselves, our loved ones, our community, our countryand the future of our kids.
