Today is the birthday of the Lego brick

The birth of the blocks that have built billions of dreams

On Jan. 28, 1958, the world was changed. Well, nobody knew it at that time, save for a bunch of people working on a new way to improve a toy that has started to capture the imagination of children in Europe.

Lego founder Ole Christiansen’s son, Godtfred Kirk, had this idea to improve on the bricks his father had originally designed. See, people were having problems stacking the bricks together. So Godtfred met with key people in Lego at that time, at their office in Billund, Denmark, to figure out what to do.

The long and short of it is the development of the inner clutch tubes that are now found at the base of most Lego bricks. What started as a two-tube concept later turned into a three-tube idea, which Godtfred sketched and handed to Ove Nielsen, who was then head of Lego’s molding shop.

Ove made a wooden sample of the new brick design, and a patent for it was filled on Jan. 28, 1958, at exactly 1:58 p.m.

And the rest, as they say, is history.
