Leo Rey Yanson, sister strengthen control of largest bus conglomerate

Leo Rey Yanson and sister Ginnette Y. Dumancas now fully control the country's largest bus company, Bacolod City-based Yanson Group (YGBC).

“Despite the challenges faced in 2020, the business remains strong and resilient," according to Leo Rey, youngest son of the group's matriarch, Olivia V. Yanson.

The Yansons ( Olivia V. Yanson, Leo Rey Yanson, and sister Ginnette Y. Dumancas) are in control of the Yanson Group of Bus Companies.

He was re-elected chairman and president of YGBC's key subsidiaries in a series of stockholders' meetings from December 5, 2020 to January 18, 2021.

Olivia was reelected as corporate secretary and treasurer of the transport companies.

The group remains committed to providing the riding public with the most reliable means of public transportation for all, according to the YGBC statement issued yesterday.

Its newly-elected board of directors is "excited to provide quality transportation to every Filipino despite the challenges of the pandemic", the statement added.

YGBC called annual meetings for its subsidiaries, including Vallacar Transit Inc., Ceres Liner Travel and Tours, Mindanao Star Bus Transport Inc., Bachelor Express Inc. and Southern Star Bus Transport.

The business units of the bus conglomerate also include Ceres Transport Inc., Goldstar Bus Transit Inc. and Rural Transit (Mindanao) Inc.

Ricardo B. Yanson and wife Olivia founded YGBC in 1968, starting with just one jeepney unit.

The family embarked on jeepney assembly and diversified into a small bus line in the early 1970s when the market was flooded with Ford Fieras.

Their buses plied the Bacolod City-Valladolid-La Carlota route (hence Vallacar) and named it as the Ceres Liner.

Under Leo Rey's leadership, YGBC expanded its fleet to over 4,800 buses with 18,000 employees providing public transportation to 700,000 people daily in 2019.
