Diokno back to work next week

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Benjamin E. Diokno who had surgery on Sunday to remove a blood clot from a head injury, has been discharged from St. Lukes Medical Center on Wednesday.

A source close to Diokno said he is “up and about” and is expected to return to work next week. Diokno, who will be 73 years old in March, apparently suffered low blood sugar since he also has diabetes.

A statement from the BSP said Diokno left the hospital “earlier than expected today, January 20” due to his “steady recovery from a successful medical procedure” on January 17.

“The Governor is now recuperating at home and may preside over the Monetary Board meeting as early as next week,” said the BSP.

The BSP released a statement on Monday that Diokno has assigned one of his three deputy governors, Francisco G. Dakila Jr., to take charge while he is on medical leave.

Diokno was appointed in March 2019 as the BSP’s fifth governor. He is serving the remaining four years of his predecessor Governor Nestor A. Espenilla Jr.’s six-year term or until mid-2023. Espenilla passed away in February 2019 from cancer.
