This painting commemorates the historic 2020 eruption of Taal Volcano

‘2020 had an explosive start’

Before the coronavirus pandemic hit the Philippines, there was the Taal Volcano. Among the iconic landforms of the country, the seemingly quiet volcano shocked Filipinos early in 2020 when it started to produce smoke and dust near areas with its ashes.

Though a year has passed and many have already risen from it, it is undeniable that the eruption of the Taal Volcano set tone for the following months of 2020.

Immortalizing that historic event and the power of nature is Filipino artist Jeff Salon with his piece dubbed The Falling Beginning.

“Jan. 12 was when Batangas and its surrounding areas were covered on ash. Everything turned completely gray, and quakes were also felt in areas near Taal,” the artist posted. “This is a painting of a boy and his friend dog watching the gigantic blow of Taal. The eruption depicts the images of some animals looking for help and where to hide.”

The piece is part of Jeff’s seventh solo exhibit titled “Night Watch,” which is now available for viewing until Jan. 22 at Art Verité Gallery in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.
