STREAMING REVIEW: Is Netflix's 'Lupin' the next 'Money Heist'? Yes....and no
By Angie Chui

There's a new king on Netflix's Top 10 and its none other than French heist series Lupin.
Not to be confused with the classic anime Lupin III (who also happens to be a brilliant con artist and strategist), Netflix’s new series centers around a character names Assane Diop (Omar Sy) who takes inspiration from the adventures of Arsene Lupin, a gentleman burglar created by 1905 French writer Maurice LeBlanc.
Synopsis: Assane comes up with a plot to steal Marie Antoinette's necklace from the Louve with an intricate plan. He gets a job as a janitor for the museum a few weeks before a scheduled auction to case the target. He employs a ragtag team of petty criminals to pull off the heist with switcheroos, double crosses, disguises and the whole nine yards, but unknown to them, their accomplice is more than capable of pulling off a flawless heist on his own through his intelligence and sophistication.
While it would be easy to compare the series to the Spanish hit Money Heist, Lupin is both similar and different. In the same way, it is simpler, and more complex.
While the success of the operation of The Professor and his team hinged upon every element of the plan (and the players) to work smoothly, Lupin’s MO is different. His motives are multi-layered. His vendetta is clear but his real plan is known only to himself and this makes for an interesting viewing experience as more layers of the main plot is revealed with every installment.
From the first episode, audiences can already feel a sense of who Lupin is, and this is largely credited to actor Omar Sy. He has the ability to draw audiences into his performance and make them feel like he always has something up his sleeve. He has an everyman appeal that makes viewers root for him. But what really seals the deal for the main character is Lupin's backstory. When the audience is rooting for the antihero to get away with something like stealing a multi million euro bauble, you know you’ve got yourself a winner.
It is truly interesting to see how Lupin will play out in future episodes, especially since he already has a sharp detective who is hot on his heels. Luckily, its a quick binge with only five episodes. The downside? Fans would have to wait for another year or so for a follow up season.
