Six out of 10 Filipinos believe that President Duterte’s possible run as vice president in the 2022 national elections would violate the Constitution, based on the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey results released on Monday, Sept. 27.
The survey found 60 percent of adult Filipinos saying that “the proposal that President Rodrigo Duterte should run for Vice-President in the 2022 election violates the intention of the Constitution, which should first be amended before he may run for office again.”
Meanwhile, 39 percent were saying that “President Rodrigo Duterte should run for vice president in the 2022 election because I would like his management of the government to continue.”
The remaining 1 percent did not give an answer.
The second quarter 2021 SWS survey was conducted from June 23 to 26, using face-to-face interviews of 1,200 adults nationwide.
SWS noted that majorities across basic demographics are saying that President Duterte running in 2022 would be a violation of the Constitution.
“By area, the proportion of those who say it would violate the Constitution if President Duterte runs in 2022 was highest in Balance Luzon (65 percent), followed by the Visayas (59 percent), Metro Manila (56 percent), and Mindanao (53 percent),” it pointed out.
Likewise, SWS said that majority of the respondents in all educational levels share this view–67 percent among non-elementary graduates, 70 percent among elementary graduates, 52 percent among junior high school graduates, and 61 percent among college graduates.
“Regardless of poverty, majorities are opposed to a VP run for President Duterte,” it added.
Moreover, SWS noted that most of the respondents who expressed dissatisfaction with President Duterte’s performance are against his vice presidential bid in 2022.
The June 2021 survey found 75 percent of adult Filipinos satisfied, 12 percent undecided, and 13 percent dissatisfied with the performance of the President.
Those who oppose a vice presidential bid for President Duterte in 2022 were highest among “very dissatisfied” with his performance as President (88 percent), followed by those “somewhat dissatisfied” (83 percent), “undecided” (81 percent), “somewhat satisfied” (62 percent), and “very satisfied” (42 percent).
