DND extends needed assistance to COVID-hit Batanes

The national government is set to provide the needed assistance to the province of Batanes now that it is experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases.

In a social media post, it was revealed that provincial Governor Marilou H. Cayco has already requested the office of the Defense Department for transportation support which was immediately approved.

“A Philippine Navy Ship from Sangley Point, Cavite is expected to arrive in the province on September 25, carrying various supplies such as NFA and commercial rice, 4,500 food packs from DSWD and various in-kind donations from numerous generous individuals and institutions,” said a statement posted on the province’s official Facebook page.

Batanes released Executive Order No. 25 last week, placing the entire province under Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) from September 20 to October 4.

Meantime, Batanes has recorded 48 new COVID-19 cases as of Wednesday, September 22, raising the current number of active cases to 204.

Basco remains to be the epicenter of COVID infections with 147 active cases.

The province is still reeling from the effects of Typhoon “Kiko” which battered the area with wind gust of up to 265 kph.
