482 COVID variants found in Western Visayas


ILOILO CITY — The number of COVID-19 variants found in Western Visayas region has climbed to 482 according to the latest data of the Department of Health (DOH-6).

Dr. Marie Jocelyn Te said that the presence of the Alpha, Beta, Delta, Gamma, Lambda, and Theta variants in Western Visayas have been confirmed by the laboratory results of specimens tested by the Philippine Genome Center in Metro Manila.

Of the five COVID-19 variants found in Western Visayas, Delta had the most cases with 176. Delta is said to be more contagious and even deadly.

The Delta variant is followed by the Beta variant with 111 cases and 81 cases of the Theta variant.

Western Visayas region also has one case each of the Gamma and Lambda variants respectively.

Iloilo province still has the most number of COVID-19 variants with 143.

There are also 72 cases of COVID-19 variants in Antique province; 64 cases in Bacolod City; 61 cases in Iloilo City; 56 cases in Negros Occidental province; 35 cases in Guimaras province; and 24 cases in Capiz province.

As of September 21, Western Visayas has 16,342 active cases of COVID-19 with Iloilo province having the most number of active cases at 6,378.

A total of 602 new COVID-19 cases were also recorded Tuesday, September 21.
