He was named one of the Ten Outstanding Young men in 1961 and received the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature four times, all for his poetry.

Torres's published works include three poetry collections and monographs and essays on art.

His art book Kayamanan: 77 Paintings from The Central Bank Collection (1981) received the Manila Critics Circle and Gintong Aklat awards in 1982.

" held in high esteem by the arts and humanities community both locally and internationally, Professor Torres had also been a member of committees on art exhibits around the world," Ateneo President Roberto Yap SJ said.

Torres graduated from AdMU in 1954, received his Master of Arts from Iowa State University through a Fullbright scholarship in 1957, and was a member of the university's faculty from 1958 until his retirement in 2003.
