The executive committee (Execom) of the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) has opposed the nomination of Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque to a seat in the United Nations' International Law Commission (ILC).
"Atty. Roque has a very poor track record of promoting, defending, and fulfilling human rights and the rule of law, especially during the administration of President Rodrigo R. Duterte in which he serves as a cabinet member," the UPD Execom said in a statement on Tuesday, Sept. 14.
"Therefore, his inclusion in the Commission would not serve its purposes but instead diminish the reputation of the body," it added.
The UPD Executive Committee is composed of the chancellor as the committee chair, vice-chancellors, deans and directors of colleges and schools, university registrar, and three members-at-large elected by the university council.
The opposition to Roque's ILC nomination was resolved during the 314th Execom meeting held on Sept. 13, 2021.
Roque was a professor of public international law at the UP College of Law.
