The Filipino creative spirit is alive in this year’s MTV VMAs

Marking its four-decade legacy, the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) brought the party to Barclay Center in New York to honor the voices and artists honing today's music scene. Hosted by singer Doja Cat, the 40th VMAs was star-studded as ever with the appearances of music icons Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, and Cyndi Lauper. Keeping everyone in gleeful spirit are the musical performances of Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, Alicia Keys, Camila Cabello, Shawn Mendes, and Twenty One Pilots, to name a few. But what’s more remarkable in this year’s ceremony is the high level of Filipino representation we saw on its stage.

Bringing pride to the Philippines last Sept. 12, 2021, were Tiktok superstar Bella Poarch, social media personality Bretman Rock presented the award for “Best Breakthrough Song,” and pop singer Olivia Rodrigo, who got took home three honors, tieing up with country singer Lil Nas X and K-pop powerhouse BTS for most wins.

Of course, what is the VMAs without scene-stealing fashion moments? Wild, sensual, and artsy style was the theme Fil-Am artist brought on the red carpet. Lil Kim may need to share a little bit of space on the VMAs style hall of fame because what these artists donned on the red carpet are just as iconic as her purple pasties back in 1999.

Beauty vlogger Bretman Rock paid homage to R&B singer Aaliyah by wearing a Roberto Cavalli piece she wore 21 years ago at the VMAs. A part of the fashion label’s fall 2000 runway collection, the dress features a yellow and black animal stripes print and a thigh-high slit with fur trim running along the hemline.

Much like an old Hollywood blonde bombshell, Saweetie donned a silver metallic evening gown on the red carpet. The dress is from Valentino’s resort 2022 collection.

Bringing the heat of “Inferno” to the VMAs was Bella Poarch with her dramatic black ensemble.

Prior to bringing home the Best Artist, Best Song, and Best New Artist awards, the 18-year-old “Driver’s License” singer wore a piece two years older than her from Versace’s archives. The dress from the fashion label’s 2001 spring couture collection is a pink garb with a purple tulle overlay and features a design that’s “inspired by the tailored silhouettes of the 1940s” with elements such as intricate draping and visible boning echoing the era’s style.
