At least 14 people died while 26 others were reported missing during the onslaught of typhoon “Jolina” which pounded some parts of Luzon and the Visayas with heavy rains and strong winds.
On Wednesday, police reported that there were a total of four cadavers of fishermen that were found on the coastal areas of Sto. Nino town in Samar—identified as 52-year old Alejandro Solayao, 39-year old Sanieboy Ebayan, Joseph Immas, and Benedicto dela Paz, also both of Tacloban City, all of Tacloban City.
Their identities were confirmed by survivors who were among the 50 fishermen rescued in the town.
The fishermen came from various areas in Eastern Visayas. Their fishing vessels were damaged by the strong waves.
Police also reported on Wednesday that a fisherman drowned in Buenavista town of Marinduque. He was identified as Jovert Garay.
In Maasin City in Southern Leyte, 22-year old Marcelo Lolo was reported to have drowned while trying to save a floating cottage banging against the seawall due to rough waters.
In Tarangnan, Samar, 33-year-old Ryan Jerusalem, a fisherman from Brgy. Majacob was found dead with a head injury. He was hit by a piece of wood while on his way home.
Mark Jhun Nierras, 22, a fisherman from Brgy. Valles Bello, Daram, Samar was found dead floating at the rocky portion of the shore of Sitio Guintuldahan, Brgy. Cabitun-an, Daram, Samar.
In Catbalogan City, Bienvenido Marquez, 65, died when his fishing vessel capsized due to pounding waves and strong winds.
Two more fatalities were reported and were identified as Roy Carcellar from Cambuhay, Daram, Samar; and Danilo Ogano from Libucan Dako, Tarangnan, Samar.
In Masbate, the Office of Civil Defense reported that there were two people who drowned in a flashflood that hit Cawayan and Placer towns. But their deaths are still for validation, according to local OCD officials.
In Laurel town of Batangas, a construction worker died after he was buried in a landslide.
In all areas affected by “Jolina”, a total of 26 people were reported missing. They include nine fishermen from Eastern Visayas, 14 people in Masbate, and three more in Marinduque.
Based on the initial data, the weather disturbance damaged more than 3,600 houses and caused P301 million worth of damage in agriculture and infrastructure. The damage assessment is on-going.
