TACLOBAN CITY - The strong winds and heavy downpour caused by Typhoon 'Jolina' (Conson) left 10 casualties and several missing in Eastern Visayas as of Wednesday afternoon (September 8).
The fatalities were identified as Alejandro Solayao and Sonny Ibayan from Tacloban City; Roy Carcellar from Cambuhay, Daram, Samar; and Danilo Ogano from Libucan Dako, Tarangnan, Samar.
Marcelo Lolo, 22, a resident of Brgy. Asuncion, Maasin City, Southern Leyte drowned after trying to save a floating cottage banging against the seawall due to rough waters.
He was found to have sustained a fatal head injury by the Philippine Coast Guard, Maasin City.
In Tarangnan, Samar, 33-year-old Ryan Jerusalem, a fisherman from Brgy. Majacob was found dead with a head injury. He was hit by a piece of wood while on his way home.
Jerusalem has been missing since he left Brgy. Lucerdoni when Typhoon 'Jolina' was passing the said place.
Mark Jhun Nierras, 22, a fisherman from Brgy. Valles Bello, Daram, Samar was found dead floating at the rocky portion of the shore of Sitio Guintuldahan, Brgy. Cabitun-an, Daram, Samar.
Investigation disclosed that the victim, together with his brother Melchor Nierras and 3 others were onboard on their fishing boat traversing from the seawaters of Brgy. Cabitun-an heading to Brgy. Valles Bello, when their boat encountered big waves causing huge damage.
They jumped into the seawater and swam towards the shore to keep themselves safe. However, they noticed that Mark Jhun was nowhere to be found. Efforts to find him turned futile.
In Catbalogan City, Bienvenido Marquez, 65, died when his fishing vessel capsized due to pounding waves and strong winds.
The 7 other crew members including his son were rescued in Brgy. Buluan.In Sto. Niño, Samar 2 fatalities identified as Joseph Imnas, resident of Brgy. Diit, Tacloban City, and Benedicto de Paz, both residents of Brgy. Diit, Tacloban City were found dead on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, 50 fishermen who were reported missing from different towns and cities in Leyte and Samar provinces were rescued in Sto. Niño, Samar.'Jolina' made three landfalls in Hernani, Eastern Samar (10 a.m.) on Monday, and in Daram, Samar (2 a.m.) and Sto Niño, Samar (3:40 a.m.) on Tuesday.
