Churches in Metro Manila cancel public masses as NCR stays under MECQ

Several churches in Metro Manila have cancelled public masses after the national government recalled its earlier declaration to place the capital region under the general community quarantine with alert level system on Sept. 8.

Paco Church in Manila, Basilica Minore de San Pedro Bautista and Most Holy Redeemer Parish-Masambong in Quezon City, San Antonio de Padua Parish in Cubao, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal National Shrine Parish in Parañaque said their public masses are suspended starting Sept. 8 and the following weeks until the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) decides again on Metro Manila's new quarantine status.

The IATF announced that Metro Manila would remain under the modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) until Sept. 15, on Tuesday night.

Some churches were supposed to hold public masses on Sept. 8 to celebrate the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

“Lumabas po kahapon, pero binawi po ngayon,” San Antonio de Padua Parish said in its social media post.

Mary Comforter of the Afflicted Parish in Pasay City, meanwhile, wrote: “Hindi natin malaman kung ano ba talaga ang desisyon ng Gobyreno. Kaya bukas, magbabalik muli tayo sa MECQ.”

Other churches that have cancelled public masses were The Manila Cathedral and Sta Cruz Parish in Manila.

Despite cancelling public masses, San Antonio de Padua Parish in Cubao and the Archdiocesan Shrine of Nuestra Señora De Guia or Ermita Church said they will be open for personal prayers.
