Pagara tried to commit suicide? Fake news, says police chief

CEBU CITY – Rape charges have been filed against professional boxer Albert Pagara, who was accused of sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl in Barangay Inayawan.

Police Maj. Jose Angelo Acupinpin, chief of Pardo Police Station, said that contrary to some news reports, Pagara remained in detention after undergoing online inquest proceedings last Friday.

“He is still detained but he has filed for bail and it’s up to the court to decide on it,” Acupinpin said Monday, September 6.

Acupinpin also denied reports that the 27-year-old boxer had tried to commit suicide.

Acupinpin said the jailer and the police station’s desk officer revealed there were no official reports about Pagara attempting to kill himself.

Reports had it that the boxer tried to hang himself inside the detention cell but was prevented by fellow inmates.

“I was surprised when I heard about the news that he tried to commit suicide. He is acting normal. He is jolly and there are no indications that he is suicidal,” said Acupinpin.

Pagara was arrested by barangay tanods last week when relatives of the 14-year-old girl complained that she was sexually abused.

Pagara did not resist arrest but he denied the allegations against him, police said.
