The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said the first day of registration in the National Capital Region (NCR) while under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) saw a heavy turnout of registrants.

In a statement, Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez reported that long queues were formed outside many offices.

"In general these queues remained orderly and compliant with minimum health protocols," he said in a statement on Monday, Sept. 6.

"Many Comelec Offices did not announce cut-offs, and many announced that they could accomodate in excess of 300 applicants," added Jimenez.

Despite the strong turn out of applicants, he said, there is still "no indication of a possible reversal of the decision not to grant an extension."

The Comelec approved the conduct of voter registration in areas under MECQ on Sept. 1.

Metro Manila is under MECQ until Sept. 7.
