Bacolod mayor asks PNP chief for deeper probe on cop's slay

BACOLOD CITY – Mayor Evelio Leonardia has ordered a deeper investigation on the killing of a policeman here last week.

This, after he talked to Police Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), asking him to give special attention to the death of Police Staff Sgt. Joseph Nepomuceno Jr. 37, who was assigned to the anti-illegal drug unit here.

Nepomuceno, who was on duty, was tailed and gunned down by unidentified motorcycle-riding assailants upon reaching Rosario Street, Barangay 38 here on August 29.

"This is a very sad incident for Bacolod because we lost a valuable asset in our fight against illegal drugs," the local chief executive said.

Leonardia, who visited the wake of the slain cop at their residence in Barangay 14 on Thursday, extolled Nepomuceno for being an exemplary member of the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO), citing him for his honesty, bravery, and integrity in the war against illegal drugs.

"I salute him for a job well done. The people of Bacolod are grateful for his service," Leonardia said, adding that Nepomuceno’s dedication and commitment to serve the people of Bacolod are worth emulating.

A Special Investigation Task Group Nepomuceno was convened upon the directive of Police Brig. Gen. Rolando Miranda, director of Police Regional Office (PRO)-6, and with the concurrence of the chief PNP.

Two days after the cop’s slay, a gruesome case happened on August 31, victimizing an alleged drug personality here.

A headless body of an unidentified man was found at the same area, where the policeman was killed, while a severed head was recovered later that night at Purok Sigay, Barangay 2.

Leonardia said that he also asked Eleazar to help the City in its campaign against the illegal drug trade.
