Wright redeems self in late rally as Phoenix completes mighty comeback vs Rain or Shine

Matthew Wright scored a go-ahead jumper despite enduring perhaps the worst shooting game of his career as Phoenix Super LPG came back to defeat Rain or Shine, 78-76, Thursday, Sept. 2 in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Don Honorio Ventura State University in Bacolor, Pampanga.
Wright proved why he’s the Fuel Masters’ most reliable guy in the clutch even if he had missed all of his previous 14 attempts. turning past Gabe Norwood before hitting a tough shot over Bradwyn Guinto with 2.6 seconds left to break a 76-all tie.
But Wright’s heroics nearly went to waste when he fouled Beau Belga on the ensuing play with 1.7 ticks to go and the Fuel Masters in penalty, sending the burly Elasto Painters big man to the foul line.
Belga, attempting free throws using just his right hand, made the first one but missed the second that would have likely sent the game into overtime, giving Phoenix an incredible win despite being down 17 in the third and 15 halfway into the fourth.
Phoenix improved to 2-4, moving to a tie for eighth spot with Alaska which earlier in the day lost to NLEX.
Coach Topex Robinson praised Wright for finding ways to save the Phoenix despite being limited to four points after coming into the restart as the league’s topscorer with an average of 19.8 per game.
“Matthew will win games for us and he’ll lose games for us,” said Robinson. “No matter what, he will take that shot. I mean, he’s a winner, he wants to win and he’ll find ways to win.”
There were plenty of heroes for the Fuel Masters, who looked sluggish all throughout as the Elasto Painters took a 52-35 lead in the third and seemed to be in control when they were ahead 74-59 with exactly six minutes remaining in the game.
But the Fuel Masters scored 17 straight points in stunning fashion behind Jake Pascual, Chris Banchero, Jason Perkins and RR Garcia, whose corner three and baseline put them ahead, 76-74, with 41.2 seconds to go.
Gabe Norwood answered for ROS on the ensuing play with a bank shot from 15 feet, before Wright delivered when it mattered.
Garcia and Perkins scored 18 points each while Banchero had an all-around showing for Phoenix with 14 points, three rebounds, two assists and five steals.
Javee Mocon and Beau Belga had 17 points apiece but Rain or Shine fell to sixth at 4-3.
