19 crew members test positive for COVID-19 on cargo ship in US San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO -- Nineteen of the 21 crew members aboard a cargo ship anchored in U.S. San Francisco Bay have tested positive for the coronavirus, and six have been transported to hospitals, according to a report by the San Francisco Chronicle on Tuesday.

A San Francisco Fire Department fireboat transported the six crew members of the Global Striker to the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center and California Pacific Medical Center on Monday afternoon, said Pantelis Vasilarakis, public information officer for the Coast Guard's San Francisco division.

Details about the outbreak's origin have not been confirmed. The crew's vaccination statuses were also unknown, Vasilarakis said.

The vessel arrived in San Francisco Bay from the Port of Sacramento. Port officials said Tuesday that the vessel was anchored at Anchorage 9 in San Francisco.

None of the six patients were in critical condition, according to San Francisco fire officials.
