Metro Manila mayors amenable to MECQ extension up to Sept. 7

Paranaque City Mayor Edwin Olivarez, also chairman of the Metro Manila Council (MMC), said the Metro Manila mayors are amenable to the extension of the Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ) in the National Capital Region (NCR) for another one week.

The MECQ status in NCR should last up to Aug. 31, but the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-MEID) retained the quarantine status up to Sept. 7, according to presidential spokesperson Harry Roque.

Roque also announced that aside from Metro Manila, the nearby provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal will also stay under MECQ.

Olivarez, in a text message, said the MMC supports the one-week quarantine extension to fight the spread of COVID-19, particularly the highly transmissible Delta variant.

He said granular lockdowns will be implemented by the local government unit’s in areas with clustering of COVID-19 cases.

The mayor said the unified curfew hour from 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. will also remain up to Sept. 7.
