PH's largest coal-fired power plant under lockdown

The Team Energy Sual Power Station, the largest coal-fired power plant in the country, located in Barangay Pangascasan is under a two-week lockdown after 14 of its employees tested positive for COVID-19.

Sual Mayor Liseldo Calugay, through Executive Order No. 32 series of 2021, ordered the power plant under lockdown beginning Thursday, August 26 to September 10, 2021.

In his executive order, Calugay said the power plant needs to be locked down in order to isolate its employees to prevent infection to other individuals in town.

Despite the power plant under lock down, its operation would still continue.

Greggy Romualdez, Team Energy Corporation Head of External Affairs, said that they will cooperate fully and comply with Mayor Calugay’s issued Executive Order.

“All efforts are being exhausted by our organization to ensure the plant’s continuous operations. We have contingency measures in place, and we are fully prepared to deal with this situation”, he added.

Meanwhile, Calugay’s order forbids employees to go outside the plant premises in the duration of the lockdown.

Only authorized personnel are allowed access inside and outside the plant for them to deliver basic goods and services.

To further cement this order, Calugay ordered the local PNP to cordon the entire area, and block every entry and exit point in the power plant.

Sual Power Station is the largest coal-fired power station in the country with a generating capacity of 1,200 MW.

The plant is being operated by Team Energy, under a joint venture between the Tokryo Electric Power Corporation, and the Marubeni Corporation.
