Apple just enabled support (as beta) for using your own domain for your iCloud Mail. This is available only if you are a paid iCloud subscriber, i.e., iCloud+ subscriber. With this new feature, if you own a domain, you can have Apple manage your email by pointing your mail exchange to iCloud. Email addressed to this domain will be delivered in your icloud.com inbox. So how does it work?
- Go to beta.icloud.com (login using the AppleID associated with your iCloud+ subscription)
- Click on Account Settings
- Select Custom Email Domain and click Manage
- Click on Add a domain you own
- You will asked if your domain will be available only for you or will be shared with family (I selected shared with family)
- Now you will be asked to provide your own domain, e.g., domainX.com.
- You will be prompted to add an email address on your domain, e.g., [email protected]
- You will be asked to click Confirm and then an email will be sent to that email address to verify that you own it and have access to it. In my case, since I decided to use a brand new domain, I had to wait for a couple of hours to setup the correct MX records to a temporary mail server, just so I can get that verification email. I was not expecting this, but I am glad that this step can help prevent someone from hijacking a domain.
- Once you have it verified, you will be presented with the DNS entries for your domain. You will have two MX servers, two TXT entries and a CNAME entry which you need to add on your DNS database (delete the existing MX servers and related DNS entries associated with your previous mail server)
- Finally, you will be asked to select which is your main email address to send emails from when you access Mail — you can select your new email address on your own domain, or retain the icloud.com address.
I have successfully setup my own domain on iCloud+. There are some issues that I have encountered, which are expected as it is still on beta. One issue is that it won’t allow me to create a single or two-character email addresses, which I hope is a beta issue and not a hard limitation on Apple’s part. Also, the family sharing still does not work yet— members of your Family Sharing will get a notification about the availability of this new domain, but they will have an error when they try to sign-up. Even if you have successfully set this up, you will not be able to send from this email address unless you access it via beta.icloud.com.
It is still beta software, so issues are expected. Will Apple release this as part of iOS 15 this September? I sure hope so. However, there might not be enough time to thresh out some of the issues. I think that this will be offered as beta, similar to iCloud+ Private Relay, when iOS 15 drops. Overall, this is a welcome addition to iCloud+ features.
