Robredo's possible 2022 bid gets boost from lawyers

A group of lawyer volunteers will launch a free online legal assistance program and information desk as a way to show its support for Vice President Leni Robredo and back her possible presidential run in 2022.

The lawyers will come together for the launch of “Lawyers for Leni” on Friday, August 26, the same day that the group will also start conducting the two activities.

“As lawyers, we have seen how respect for the rule of law has deteriorated in the past five years. A lot of times, the law was used to serve personal interests of a few instead of being an instrument to bring social justice,” lawyer Ram Ramos, the group’s spokesperson, said in a statement.

Ramos stressed that a government under the leadership of Robredo will help restore the rule of law, which is vital in Philippine democracy.

Members of the lawyers group will make their pitch for the vice president’s potential 2022 presidential bid during their official virtual launch at 11 a.m. Friday via its Facebook page and through Zoom.

Lawyers for Leni is among the latest group to organize movements urging Robredo to seek the presidency next year.

Just last week, various groups in Quezon province launched a local campaign called “Quezon for Leni.” This was followed by the “Teachers for Leni” and “Bulacan for Leni“ movement, both of which also call on Robredo to run for president.

Lawyers including former Supreme Court spokesperson Ted Te, Dean Mel Sta. Maria of the Far Eastern University Institute of Law, and his wife Ampy Sta. Maria will give their message of support for Robredo’s candidacy.

At the online event, a Manifesto of Support behind the call for Robredo to run for President in 2022 will be read.

“As of today, we have almost 300 signatures from lawyers who support Leni Robredo,” said Ramos.

The lawyer said Robredo’s political will and moral ascendancy will make the country’s legal institutions work for the best interest of the people and of the nation.
