DepEd hopes to 'match' the same enrollment as last year, but...
Ideally, the enrollment for School Year (SY) 2021-2022 should be “the same” as last school year, the Department of Education (DepEd) on Tuesday, Aug. 24, said.

“If we can match last year's enrollment figures, we will be happy with that already,” said Education Secretary Leonor Briones during the virtual presser for 2021 “Oplan Balik Eskwela.”
However, Briones also recognized that there are certain factors that affect the enrollment especially during the time of a pandemic. “The enrollment is related to the state of the economy,” she explained.
Due to the impact of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on the economy, Briones noted that many people have lost their livelihood due to the imposition of community quarantine restrictions.
In particular, Briones said that the enrollment has suffered especially in private schools. “We are witnessing a migration of learners - as well as teachers - from private and public schools,” she said.

Noting that there should be complementarity between public and private education systems, Briones expressed hope that more students will enroll this incoming school year - especially in private schools where there were significant decreases in enrollment.
As of Aug. 24, latest enrollment data based on the “Quick Count” of DepEd showed that there are 7, 911, 172 learners currently enrolled for SY 2021-2022.

Of this number, 3,184,651 enrollees in public schools, 164,022 in private schools and 5,172 in State Universities and Colleges / Local Universities and Colleges (SUCs/LUCs) that offer basic education.
The current enrollment data included the 4,557,327 learners who participated in the Early Registration held in March to May.
DepEd started the regular enrollment on Aug. 16 through a remote system for high-risk areas. It will run until the first day of classes scheduled to open in public schools on Sept. 13.

Meanwhile, private schools were allowed by DepEd to start their classes as early as June or July.
“We look forward to an increase , for parents to be able to send their children to their preferred schools,” Briones said.
“We seek your help in our campaign for our learners to go back to schools because education is a shared responsibility,” she added.
In SY 2020-2021, DepEd data showed that there were 26.6 million enrollees in the basic education level - both in public and private schools. This number is lower compared to the 27.7 million enrollment for SY 2019-2020.
“It’s health and the economy, parents have to be convinced also that their children are safe. That’s why we have blended learning or distance learning,” Briones said.
In a statement sent earlier, an official of DepEd said that there was “no specific target” for enrollment this school year.
