The Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) announced Sunday, Aug. 22, that it is opening the applications for its 2021 Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) Program.
The DOST-SEI made the announcement in a Facebook post on Sunday.
“DOST-SEI is pleased to announce the opening of applications to the 2021 Junior Level Science Scholarships (JLSS),” it wrote on Facebook.
It noted that the E-Scholarship Application System has yet to be activated.
The Institute said the system may be used “in a few days.” “But, in the meantime, you’ll need to prepare several documents before you start filing your E-application.”
While the start of online application period has yet to be announced, the last day of online application and uploading of requirements is set on Oct. 29, 2021.
Who can apply?
The PSHS said applicants must be regular third year college students enrolled in a priority S&T courses at identified universities as of First Semester of Academic Year 2021-2022, and meet the following conditions:
-Must have a general weighted average of at least 83 percent or its equivalent and with no conditional or failing mark in the first two years in college including in the midyear terms, if enrolled;
-Must be natural-born Filipino citizen;
-Must be of good moral character and in good health; and
-May have taken the DOST-SEI Scholarship Examination before but did not pass or have qualified for the DOST-SEI Undergarduate Scholarship but did not avail the scholarship award.
“The JLSS Program aims to provide scholarships that will finance the education of talented and deserving students in their third year of college and who are pursuing degree programs in the areas of science and technology; and ensure a steady, adequate supply of qualified S&T human resources who can steer the country towards national progress,” the DOST-SEI said.
JLSS scholarships
Under JLSS, three types of scholarships are being offered. These are Science and Technology scholarship as provided under Republic Act No. 7687 or the “Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994”; Fast-Tracked Science and Technology scholarship as provided under RA No. 10612 or the “Fast-Tracked Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 2013”; and the MERIT scholarship or the National Science and Technology Authority (NSTA) scholarship under RA No. 2067 or the the “Science Act of 1958.”
NSTA scholarship is awarded to students with high aptitude in science and mathematics and are willing to pursue careers in the field of science and technology.
"Both the Merit and R.A. 7687 scholarship programs aim to produce more Filipino scientists and engineers to support knowledge creation and economic productivity in the country. Scholar-graduates of these programs are required to work along their fields of specialization in the country for a period equivalent to the length of the scholarship coverage,” the DOST-SEI said.
“The R.A. 10612, on the other hand, provides for competent science and mathematics teachers in senior high schools through the employment of the graduates of this program by the Department of Education (DepEd), in support of the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 (RA 10533) or the K to 12 Act,” it added.
