Isko Moreno still regarded by 1Sambayan as possible 2022 candidate

Opposition coalition 1Sambayan is still open to include Manila Mayor Isko Moreno to its list of nominees in the May 2022 polls, one of its convenors said on Wednesday, August 18.

In an online media forum, 1Sambayan convenor Howard Calleja said they are still in constant talk with Moreno for his possible inclusion in its final list of presidential candidates next year.

“Tuloy-tuloy naman ang usapan with Mayor Isko (We continue our talks with Mayor Isko),” he said. “Ang sabi lang niya (What he only said) is just give him time.”

Calleja, a lawyer, noted the coalition still has until the end of August before the group closes the nomination process.

“So whether kasama (he will be included), I’m sure we have more than enough time and space to include Mayor Isko in the same way that other individuals, other candidates may likewise be included,” the convenor said.

“Because as I said, we are more for inclusivity and we are for the openness to have the democratic forces. It’s not a matter of having a candidate, I think more iimportant is uniting under one candidate,” he stressed.

1Sambayan initially included Moreno in its list of nominees, but before its announcement on June 12, he sent a letter to the coalition, stating his decision to be excluded. He said he was focusing on the COVID-19 vaccination of Manila residents.

The group is aiming to endorse a single slate of candidates—president, vice president, and senators—as it believes only a united ticket of opposition forces can defeat President Duterte’s anointed candidates.

Calleja said the 1Sambayan candidates for the upcoming elections may be named in October in time for the filing of certificates of candidacy (COCs) for elective posts.

“The timeline of the Comelec (Commission on Elections) is October 1 to 8. I think whatever announcement we would have is within that timeline,” he said.

“I’m sure on or before for that period we will come up with a good alternative for the Filipino people,” Calleja added.
