CHR condemns, probes killing of 12-year-old girl in Camarines Sur

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has strongly condemned the brutal killing of a 12-year-old girl in Nabua town in Camarines Sur and has started its own investigation.

The decomposing body of girl (Manila Bulletin omitted the name) was found along the road in Barangay La Bustrac at about 9 a.m. last Aug. 9.

The girl’s grandmother reported that the girl was missing since Aug. 4.

CHR Spokesperson and lawyer Jacqueline Ann de Guia said the news about the girl's death is especially heartbreaking as the country commemorates the 12th year anniversary of the passage of the Magna Carta of Women this week.

"The persisting culture of violence against women and girls is once again highlighted in the recent slay of... (the girl). Such transgression is unacceptable and violates the basic human rights and dignity of a girl child," De Guia said.

She said the CHR has recognized the commitment made by the local officials to deliver justice to the victim and her family.

"Likewise, the Commission will also look into the police shooting of the murder suspect who allegedly tried to attack the authorities while being questioned under custody," De Guia said.

Reports stated that the suspect, identified as Ricky Ebonite of Barangay Santiago Old, was being questioned inside the police headquarters in Nabua last Aug. 11 when he reportedly tried to grab the service firearm of PMaj. Divino John Pelea.

Ebonite was then shot by PLtCol. Alex Peñafiel, and the suspect was declared dead while being brought to the hospital.
