ILOILO CITY – A soldier assigned to the 12th Infantry Battalion (IB) was killed in broad daylight last Aug. 11 by armed men believed to be New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Tapaz, Capiz.
The hierarchy of the Philippine Army (PA) has condemned the alleged execution of Corporal Frederic Villasis.
“This cowardly attack proves once again that communist terrorist groups are human rights violators,” said Major Gen. Eric Vinoya, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division (ID).
“It was a cold-blooded murder of a gallant trooper who has been faithfully serving the people of Tapaz,” added Brig. Gen. Marion Sison, commander of the 301st Infantry Brigade (301 IBde).
Major Cenon Pancito III, 3rd ID spokesperson, said Villasis was accompanying barangay officials of Lahug and were on their way to Tapaz Municipal Hall when they were stopped by a group of armed men.
Villasis, who was driving one of the motorcycles and wearing civilian clothes, was single-handedly taken by armed men while his other companions were set free.
The armed men took Villasis to the side of the unpaved road, tied him up, and fired at his back three times.
Villasis was one of the soldiers assigned to Lahug as part of the government’s community support program (CSP) activities.
“He was killed while he was serving the community as barangay officials were requesting for an ambulance to the inner barangay,” Pancito said in a Thursday interview.
The killing of Villasis coincides with the annual commemoration of International Humanitarian Law Month.
