CEBU CITY – With the increasing number of COVID-19 cases, 11 localities in the province of Cebu will be placed under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) starting August 11.
Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia was set to issue an Executive Order for the quarantine classifications on Tuesday night but some mayors have already announced through their respective Facebook accounts the implementation of the stricter quarantine classifications in 11 areas.
Set to be placed under MECQ were the towns of Samboan, Sibonga, Argao, Cordova, Oslob, Liloan, Minglanilla, Consolacion and the cities of Talisay, Naga and Carcar.
The province has six component cities and 38 towns.
The imposition of MECQ in 11 localities came after Garcia met with mayors and members of the Regional Inter-Agency Task Force.
The province was initially recommended to be placed under MECQ from August 1 to 15 but the governor appealed the recommendation.
The appeal was granted that allowed the province to stay under general community quarantine.
The Department of Health Central Visayas has noted a 119 percent two-week growth rate of new COVID-19 infections in the province.
Last Monday, August 9, the city recorded 187 new cases and 25 new deaths. The August 9 tally increased the province’s active cases to 4,408 and death toll to 1,029.
The province had a total of 23,611 cases with 18,174 recoveries as August 9.
