A mass burial site in Cebu City? Possible, says councilor

CEBU CITY – The COVID-19 situation in this city is getting worse that officials are not discounting the possibility of preparing a mass burial site for COVID-19 fatalities.

Councilor Joel Garganera, head of the city’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC), said at the rate the COVID-19 deaths are going, the city may look for an area for mass burial with most of the cemeteries already full.

“That is bound happen if the mortality rate that we’re experiencing happens in a daily basis. That is not something that cannot be avoided,” said Garganera.

A city-owned property in the mountain barangay of Adlaon may be used as a site for mass grave.

Garganera added an area owned by the city in Barangay Babag may also be converted into a cemetery.

The city government has also requested the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) to help the city purchase body bags.

“We have to do everything just to make sure the bodies will be buried immediately,” Garganera said.
The Department of Health Central Visayas (DOH 7) reported that from August 1 to August 8, COVID-related deaths in Cebu City have already reached 65.
