93% COVID-19 deaths in Iloilo City are unvaccinated

ILOILO CITY – For this year, at least 93 percent of COVID-19 deaths in Iloilo City are those unvaccinated.

From January 1 to August 7, the Iloilo City Health Office (ICHO) recorded that 226 out of 243 COVID-19 fatalities were never inoculated with any type of vaccine against COVID-19.

Dr. Roland Jay Fortuna, focal person of the city government’s COVID-19 team, first mentioned this concern as the city is bracing for the impact of more confirmed cases of the Delta variant, which is seen to be more contagious.

While there is a high rate of COVID-19 deaths to the unvaccinated, Fortuna said there were still deaths who were fully vaccinated and several others who already received their first doses.

Fortuna also noted that those who died already had existing medical conditions such as heart disease or diabetes. Their conditions turned fatal when they were infected with COVID-19.

With this startling data, Mayor Jerry Treñas has requested the national government to send more COVID-19 vaccines.

The current vaccine supply that the Iloilo City government is receiving from the national government is only good until August 17.
