Sulu PNP director shot dead by cop he scolded at Jolo checkpoint


The provincial director of the Sulu Provincial Police Office (PPO) was gunned down by a subordinate cop whom he allegedly scolded at a quarantine checkpoint in Jolo town on Friday afternoon, Aug. 6.

Police Col. Michael Bawayan Jr., 49, director of Sulu PPO, was shot dead by Police Staff Sergeant Imran Jilah, 43, a member of the 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company (2PMFC).

The suspect also died after he was shot by Bawayan's security escort.

According to initial police report, Bawayan was inspecting a quarantine checkpoint in Barangay Asturias around 4:20 p.m. when the incident occured.

Bawayan allegedly scolded the on-duty cops at the checkpoint, which led to a "heated argument".

At the height of the confrontation, Jilah pulled out his gun and shot Bawayan point blank.

The security team of Bawayan retaliated, resulting in the killing of Jilah.

Bawayan was taken to Maguindanao Integrated Provincial Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Police Brig. Gen. Ronaldo Ibay, PNP spokesperson, said the national headquarters has already launched an investigation on the incident.
