Incentive awaits Ilongga boxer for Olympic performance

ILOILO CITY – Ilongga boxer Irish Magno may have not won a medal at the Tokyo Olympics, but her efforts in representing Iloilo and the Philippines are being lauded.

During its regular session this week, the Iloilo Provincial Board unanimously passed a resolution that would give financial incentive to Magno.

Vice Gov. Christine Garin, the principal sponsor of the resolution, said Magno will receive it when she arrives back home.

Garin did not state how much money Magno would receive. The Filipina boxer hails from Janiuay, a town in central Iloilo province.

Magno ended her Olympic stint after losing to Jutamas Jitpong of Thailand in the women’s flyweight round last July 29.

Aside from the resolution passed in the Iloilo Provincial Board, Magno was also lauded by the Iloilo City Council.

A separate resolution sponsored by Iloilo City Councilor Ely Estante praised Magno for her “true grit and determination” at the Olympics that represent(ed) the highest qualities of the Ilonggos in this worldwide stage.”
