Farmer killed, father hurt in Leyte shooting

TACLOBAN CITY – A farmer was killed while his father is still being treated in a hospital after a barangay chairman shot them Wednesday, Aug 4, in Barangay Lanauan, Pastrana, Leyte.

Pastrana police chief Police Lt. Anatalio Ortega Jr. identified the victims as Jamesbert Abanes, 35; and his 68-year-old father Arnulfo.

Ortega said that the suspect and the victims have long had personal differences due to a land that the victims were cultivating. He added that they found Jamesbert lying unconscious with blood oozing from his body, while his father Arnulfo was also bleeding when they responded to the scene.

Initial investigation disclosed that prior to the incident, the fatality was working on the irrigation of his ricefield near the suspect’s ricefield.

He further said that the suspect got angry that led him to shoot the dead victim first, and his father when the latter tried to help his son.

The victims were brought to Schistosomiasis Hospital in Palo, Leyte but Jamesbert was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending physician while his father is still being treated.

The suspect fled in an unknown direction on board his motorcycle after the incident. He is still being hunted by the authorities. The responding cops recovered six empty shells of caliber .45 pistol from the crime scene.
