1Sambayan to meet with Robredo on exploratory talks with 2022 bets

Opposition coalition 1Sambayan said on Wednesday, August 4, it will invite Vice President Leni Robredo for a meeting with its 24 convenors as part of the selection process for its standard-bearer in the 2022 polls.

Father Albert Alejo, one of the lead convenors of the coalition, said they will also ask to meet with Robredo to clarify her recent meetings with some declared presidential candidates.

Robredo is one of the nominees for presidential candidate of 1Sambayan in next year’s elections. She had a meeting with Senators Richard Gordon and Panfilo Lacson, along with the latter’s runningmate Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III.

The Jesuit priest noted the meeting will serve as a good venue for the vice president to explain the “interpretation” of her actions.

“Mabuti pa si VP Leni humarap na doon sa 1Sambayan convenors para marinig din natin iyong kanyang intrepretasyon sa mga ginagawa niya at ano ba talaga ang ginagawa (It’s better for VP Leni to face the 1Sambayan convenors so we can hear what her interpretations are to what she did and what she is really doing),” he said in a media forum.

“Siguro (Maybe) within this week or early next week magkakaroon ng panahon si VP Leni na humarap sa (VP Leni will have time to meet the) 1Sambayan convenors group,” Alejo added.

The coalition has yet to speak with former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, too, who only presented to them his platform of government, but not about the recent developments with Robredo.

The vice president’s meeting with the three senators did not sit well with Trillanes because he said Lacson and Gordon cannot represent the opposition.

1Sambayan has already come out with its list of nominees, among them were Robredo, Trillanes, Senator Grace Poe, Batangas Rep. Vilma Santos-Recto, human rights lawyer Chel Diokno, and House deputy speaker and CIBAC party-list Rep. Bro. Eddie Villanueva.

Only Robredo and Trillanes did not reject the nomination as the others said they have no interest to run as either president or vice president.

Alejo said they intend to talk to both Robredo and Trillanes about any misunderstanding that may arise because of the matter.
