Unsung Hero: Man dies while saving 2 co-workers from drowning in Negros

BACOLOD CITY - A man who sacrificed his life to save his two co-workers from drowning, was found dead on Monday, July 26 in Sipalay City, Negros Occidental.

A certain Romie Morales, 60, of Bulacan, went missing on Sunday afternoon after he tried to rescue Mary Jane and her husband Louie Asuncion from drowning at the beach.

Executive Assistant Dionilo Bogtae, head of the Public Safety and Sipalay Emergency Assistance and Rescue Services (SEARS), said that Morales and the couple are working on a project here, and decided to have an outing at the hometown of one of their other co-workers in Sipalay City.

However, while the three were swimming, strong winds occurred and big waves hit them, causing them to separate.

Bogtae said that Morales first rescued Mary Jane, and when he swam back at the sea to rescue Louie, he was swept by a strong water current.

Morales failed to survive after he drowned. His body was found by residents at the shoreline of Barangay Cartagena on Monday.

Bogtae said the couple was revived and is now stable at a hospital.
