How much rain did the typhoon-enhanced 'habagat' bring?

(PAGASA)

Typhoon "Fabian" (international name "In-fa") did not have a direct effect on the country but it enhanced the southwest monsoon or "habagat" that triggered widespread rains in several Luzon areas during the past five days.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) weather specialist Ariel Rojas said 14 PAGASA monitoring stations have recorded more than 200 millimeters of rainfall from July 19 to July 23.

"Kaya malawakang pagbaha at pagguho ng lupa ang naiulat sa iba’t ibang bahagi ng ating bansa (That was why widespread floods and landslides have been reported in various parts of our country)," he said in the PAGASA's 5 p.m. weather forecast on Saturday, July 24.

Rojas also pointed out that most of the monitoring stations that registered the highest rainfall were those in the western section of Luzon due to the impact of the southwest monsoon enhanced by Fabian.

Below are the 14 stations that received the highest five-day accumulated rainfall due to habagat.

Iba, Zambales -- 711.5 millimeters

Abucay, Bataan -- 626.0 millimeters

Subic, Zambales -- 544.7 millimeters

Baguio City -- 447.5 millimeters

Port Area, Manila -- 433.0 millimeters

Ambulong, Batangas -- 417.4 millimeters

Science Garden, Quezon City -- 374.8 millimeters

Sangley Point, Cavite -- 371.8 millimeters

Tanay, Rizal -- 347.6 millimeters

NAIA, Pasay City -- 324.0 millimeters

Sinait, Ilocos Sur -- 310.5 millimeters

Romblon, Romblon -- 273.7 millimeters

Clark, Mabalacat, Pampanga -- 263.6 millimeters

San Jose, Occidental Mindoro -- 243.7 millimeters

"Sa 14 stations, apat ang nagtala ng ulan in five days na mahigit pa sa pag-ulan sa buong buwan ng Hulyo. Ito ay ang mga istasyon sa Port Area, Manila; Ambulong, Batangas; NAIA, Pasay City; at Romblon, Romblon (Of the 14 stations, four have recorded five-day accumulated rainfall which was more than the rain throughout the month of July. These are the stations in the Port Area, Manila; Ambulong, Batangas; NAIA, Pasay City; and Romblon, Romblon)," Rojas said.

The average rainfall for each of the four stations during the month of July is as follows: Port Area Station, 420.5 millimeters; Ambulong Station, 329.6 millimeters; NAIA Station, 316.7 millimeters; and Romblon Station, 260.5 millimeters.

"Yung ibang stations ay more than 50 percent ng pag-ulan sa July ang natanggap na pag-ulan in just five days (Meanwhile, the other stations received more than 50 percent of the average July rainfall in just five days)," Rojas said.

The average July rainfall for Iba, Zambales is at 838.1 millimeters; Baguio City at 781.9 millimeters; Science Garden at 493.3 millimeters; Sangley Point at 422.4 millimeters; Clark, Mabalacat, Pampanga at 422.6 millimeters; and San Jose, Occidental Mindoro at 457.5 millimeters.

"Wala namang climatological data sa mga istasyon ng Abucay, Subic, Tanay, at Sinait. Inaabot ng 30 years ang data na kailangan para magbigay ng climatological average ng ulan sa buwan ng July (There are no climatological data from the stations of Abucay, Subic, Tanay, and Sinait because we need 30 years of data to have a climatological average of rainfall in these stations for the month of July)," Rojas explained.
