PH to field strong cast at Asian Schools Chess Championships

The Philippines will field in a full delegation when it hosts the online Asian Schools Chess Championships coming off the wraps on Friday, July 23, via the Tornelo.com app.

The country will be represented by an 83-strong roster seeing action in all individual and team open and girls age categories—Under-7, U9, U11, U13, U15 and U17—of this event slated from Friday up to Sunday in the boys’ division and July 29-31 in the girls’ class.

Jasper Faeldonia, Jeremy Marticio, Jave Mareck Peteros and Robick Von Villa will represent Philippines A while Justine Mordido, Jeremiah Cruz, Carl Daluz and Janmyl Dilan Tisado will comprise Philippine B seeing action in the premier open U17 section.

Olympiad veteran Jerlyn Mae San Diego, Mhage Sebastian, Mariel Sadey Rinoa and Princes Louise Oncita banner Philippines A in the premier girls’ U17 side while Philippines B is composed of Rhea Jane Canino, Alexandra Paez, Sofia Alcala and Ayana Usman.

The event, which is organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), sanctioned by the Asian Chess Federation (ACF) and International Chess Federation (FIDE) and backed by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), has drawn a total of 890 players from 24 nations.

The country has sent the fifth highest in terms of number of participants behind 96 each by Sri Lanka and powerhouse India and Iran, and 84 by Malaysia.

Also joining are Bangladesh (66), Hong Kong (38), Indonesia (11), Iraq (8), Japan (4), Kazakhstan (12), Kyrgyzstan (31), Lebanon (20), Maldives (6), Mongolia (55), Nepal (7), Oman (10), Pakistan (5), Qatar (4), Singapore (44), Syria (15), Thailand (50), Chinese Taipei (33) and Uzbkeistan (16).

NCFP president and Senior Deputy Speaker Prospero Pichay, Jr. will usher in the event in simple opening rites that will also be graced by ACF president Sheikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nehyan, secretary-general Hisham Al Taher and executive director Casto Abundo.
