Duterte still against Sara running for president: Maybe some other time

President Duterte was still against his daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio running for president, saying she should run at some other time when the political climate in the country improves.

Duterte made the statement after Carpio said she was now open to the idea of running for president in the 2022 elections.

In his pre-recorded public address on Monday, July 12, the President said people should not give too much meaning to what his daughter said.

"'Open' lang naman. 'Open' lang (She's just open to it). That is all there is to it," he said.

However, President Duterte reiterated that he did not want Carpio to succeed him in Malacañang because he does not want her to go through the same ordeal he was going through.

"My stand is I am against, really, the candidacy of my daughter. I want her spared from the vagaries of politics dito sa Pilipinas (here in the Philippines)," he said.

"Gusto ko, itabi ko na lang muna ang anak ko (I want to keep my daughter for a while). Maybe some other time, not at this time when the Philippine politics is crowded with people in the likes of Trillanes, tapos yung si De Lima (former Senator Antonio Trillanes and Senator Leila de Lima)," he added.

"It's not good for a woman to be... you know... being... Brazen yung masyado ang mga salita at masaktan lang (Their words have become so brazen and she might get hurt). So as a father, I would not want that to happen to my daughter," he continued.

According to Duterte, he would rather pass the torch to his critics just to spare Carpio from their "virulent" remarks.

"I would rather that ibigay ang gobyerno sa kanila (hand the government over to them). Let them win," he said.

"I wish them luck and even wish them win. Kung manalo sila para kanila na itong gobyerno at gawin nila ang gusto nilang gawin (So if they win, the government is theirs and they can do whatever they want)," he added.

The President said his critics should win in the elections because they were never satisfied no matter how hard a leader worked.

"They can no longer be appeased by anything except that they are hungry, also, for power," Duterte said.

"Mabuti matikman nila para makita naman natin kung paano sila mag-perform (It's good that they have a taste of it and so we can see how they will perform)," he added.

On Monday, Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said a Duterte-Duterte tandem in 2022 was still possible. President Duterte has also said he was "seriously considering" running for vice president if it would be good for the country.
