BTS’ ‘Butter’ CD sells 2.15 million copies on first day of release

K-pop superstars BTS’ new release, the “Butter” CD single, sold more than two million copies on the first day of release.

“Butter” CD was released on July 9 and according to Korea’s Gaon Music Chart, it sold 2,153,747 copies on the first day and topped the daily retail album chart.

On the other hand, based on Korea’s Hanteo Chart, “Butter” CD sold 1,711,870 copies on the first day and topped its daily physical album chart.

The CD contains two songs, “Butter” and “Permission to Dance,” a song that Grammy winner Ed Sheeran participated in as one of the songwriters.

“Wrote this song a while ago and so happy it’s being heard on such a world stage and being sung by such talented people. Check out ‘Permission to Dance’ by @bts.bighitofficial on all platforms,” Sheeran posted on Instagram as he uploaded a video of him listening to the BTS song.

“Permission to Dance” topped iTunes’ Top Songs chart in 92 countries and regions including the US, Canada, Germany, Philippines, Japan, Italy, United Arab Emirates, Brazil, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Peru and France.

With 1.71 million copies in sales on the first day, can BTS surpass their own Hanteo Chart record for first week sales?

BTS’ “Map of the Soul: 7,” released on Feb. 21, 2020, sold 3,378,633 copies in the first week of release and holds the record of .the highest initial “chodong,” or first week sales, in K-pop history, according to Hanteo Chart.

Here are the first week sales of some of BTS albums based on Hanteo Chart’s tally:

• “Map of the Soul: 7” - 3,378,633 copies

• “BE (Deluxe Edition)” - 2,274,882

• “Map of the Soul: Persona” - 2,130,480

• “Love Yourself: Tear” - 1,003,527

• “Love Yourself: Answer” - 868,052
