Filipino math wizards bag 4 medals at 25th Junior Balkan Mathematics Olympiad

Young Filipino high school students bagged four medals at the 25th Junior Balkan Mathematics Olympiad (JBMO) held in Moldova, Eastern Europe.

The six-member Philippine team won one gold, one bronze, and two silvers in the 23-nation online competition.

The gold medal was won by Mohammd Nur Casib, a Grade 8 student from the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Central Mindanao campus in Marawi City.

Ephraim Filbert Wu of Victory International School in Pasig City and Ervin Joshua Bautista of Southville International School in Las Pinas City garnered the country’s silver medals.

Earning the bronze medal was Armea Dimayacyac of PSHS-Main Campus in Quezon City.

The other team members were Alexandra Gochuan of St. Jude Catholic School in Manila and John David Magnaye of the PSHS Main Campus.

Coach Renard Erick Chua lauded the young Filipino math wizards for a "job well done" and "inspiring their fellow numbers aces nationwide."

Topping the competition was Romania with three gold and three silver medals, followed by Saudi Arabia, with three golds, one silver and two bronzes, and Kazakhstan with two golds, one silver, and two bronzes.

Other participating countries were Bosnia, Herzegovina, Bulgaria, France, North Macedonia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Albania, Croatia, Greece, Indonesia, Kyrgyztan, Montenegro, Serbia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and host Moldova.

Each nation was represented by six students.

The Philippine team are all wards of the non-government Mathematics Trainers' Guild Phils. (MTG), an organization aiming to promote excellence in math education and training in the country and meet international standards since 1995.
