In Proclamation No. 1179, the President declared the official population count of the Philippines by province, city/municipality, and barangay based on the 2020 census. The census was conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority last September.

As of May 1, 2020, the country's total population stood at 109,035,343.

The proclamation was signed by the President on July 6. It was released by the Palace Wednesday, July 7.

Based on an executive order issued in 1996, the government conducts a census every 10 years to update the population count from the national down to the barangay level. A 1980 decree stated that the first day of May of every regular census year is the reference year.

The month of May is declared as the National Census Month.
