TD 'Emong' may bring moderate to intense rains over Batanes, Babuyan Islands -- PAGASA

(PAGASA)

Tropical depression "Emong" may bring moderate to heavy with occasional intense rains over Batanes and Babuyan Islands as early as Monday evening, July 5, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its 11 p.m. weather bulletin.

As of 10 p.m., Emong's location was estimated at 620 kilometers (km) northeast of Catarman, Northern Samar or 785 km east of Casiguran.

It has maintained its maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph while moving northwestward at 35 kph.

PAGASA said Emong may intensify into a tropical storm within 12 to 24 hours.

Tropical cyclone wind signal number 1 remains hoisted over Batanes and the northeastern portion of Cagayan, particularly Santa Ana and Gonzaga, including Babuyan Islands.

These areas may experience strong winds during the passage of Emong.

PAGASA also warned that Emong may bring moderate to heavy with at times intense rains over Batanes and Babuyan Islands from Monday evening until Tuesday noon.

"Under these conditions and considering antecedent rainfall, scattered flooding, including flash floods, and rain-induced landslides are highly likely, especially in areas with high or very high susceptibility to these hazards as identified in hazard maps," PAGASA said.

"Adjacent or nearby areas may also experience flooding in the absence of such rainfall occurrence due to surface runoff or swelling of river channels," it added.

Tropical depression Emong may continue to move generally northwestward until Tuesday morning.

PAGASA said the center of the tropical depression may pass close or over the vicinity of Batanes-Babuyan Islands area by Monday evening then leave the Philippine area of responsibility by Tuesday morning.

After passing in the vicinity of extreme northern Luzon as a tropical storm, Emong may weaken into a tropical depression due to its interaction with the rugged terrain of southern Taiwan.
