The upwelling of hot volcanic fluids within Taal Volcano's main crater has generated three-kilometer high steam plumes on Friday, July 2.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) released a footage of Taal Volcano emitting steam plumes from 5:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.

"(Taal Volcano) generated plumes (that) rose to 3,000 meters above the crater and contributed to vog over the Taal Caldera region," it said.

Phivolcs explained that vog or volcanic smog is a type of air pollution caused by volcanoes, consisting of fine droplets containing volcanic gas, such as sulfur dioxide, which is acidic and can cause irritation of the eyes, throat, and respiratory tract in severities depending on the gas concentrations and durations of exposure

Phivolcs raised Taal Volcano's status from Alert Level to 2 to Alert Level 3 on Thursday, July 1, after a short-lived phreatomagmatic eruption.

Phreatomagmatic eruption is caused by magma coming into contact with groundwater.
